CNM (Common Nautical Management)
In the 1995 treaty and after that, problems concerning the deepening of the river Scheldt are explicitly linked to a better assistance of shipping. This is a manifestation of the growing awareness that both Flanders and the Netherlands benefit from aspects such as environmental care, protection against floods, safe shipping and an increasing safety for shore inhabitants in Zeeland and Flanders.
This evolution is partly the result of external pressures. Nautical managers in Flanders as well as in the Netherlands are expected to deal with traffic flows on the river Scheldt in an efficient and organized way so that delays and waiting times are reduced.
